Better Block event

Better Block Foundation is a nonprofit that educates, equips, and empowers communities and their leaders to reshape and reactivate built environments to promote the growth of healthy and vibrant neighborhoods.

For Better Block Detroit, we’re teaming up with the Better Block Foundation, the City of Detroit, University Commons, and Detroit Collaborative Design Center to re-envision a more walkable and vibrant Livernois.

Better Block is a streetscape installation that will occur as a component of the Jazz on the Ave celebration on August 6. From design to build, this process relies on the participation of the community! What would you like to see happen on the Ave? Would you like to help build the installation? Let us know here.

For more information on Better Block, you can check out their website here.

Jane’s Walk 2016: Learn and Share About Our Neighborhood

Join us for Jane on 6, Live6’s 2016 Jane’s Walk on Saturday, May 7 at 1pm! You’ll learn about the history of the McNichols corridor and have the opportunity to share your stories. Our goal is to collect memories and stories in order to build a living history of the Live6 Corridor.

The walk will focus on the history of the McNichols corridor at Livernois. We will be meeting at University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) campus at the New Entrance on McNichols. Parking is available on campus. Our route will take us through UDM’s campus, and the Fitzgerald neighborhood, down to Marygrove, and back to campus along McNichols. Be ready for several guest speakers and story tellers to share the history of several locations along our route. Some of the points of interest we will be highlighting include: University of Detroit Mercy, The Fitzgerald Neighborhood, Marygrove College, Old Sanders and Winkleman’s Storefronts, the old Varsity Theater and the old Chessmate to name a few.

For any questions, contact Samantha Szeszulski at sszeszulski@gmail.com or Julia Kowalski at kowalskij.dcdc@gmail.com.

Can’t make the walk but want to share your story? We still want to hear from you. Share your story on our Story Page.
